Virtual, Augmented and Mixed Reality services are not new, but technical constraints have limited their capabilities and uptake. The promise of the metaverse can seem like a threat to telecoms providers who need to support increased speeds and capacity especially for uploads and lower latencies. At the same time, edge computing and other elements could offer new opportunities for telcos.
SNS-PPP has launched a project exploring technical enablers to support XR in 6G. Developers of XR services aren’t waiting a decade for the network to solve their problems, though. So what’s happening and how can XR reach scale?

Chathura Sarathchandra
Chathura Sarathchandra is a senior staff researcher at InterDigital Labs Europe. He leads projects on system enablers for emerging technologies (such as Metaverse/XR) and he is the Innovation Manager of HEU 6G-XR project. CHathura is a senior member of IEEE. He also regularly participates in various pre-standardization and standardization activities.
He received his B.Sc. Hons. and Ph.D from the school of Computer Science & Electronic Engineering of the University of Essex, U.K., and he has been awarded the UEssex scholarship for pursuing his Ph.D. Chathura has worked on various private, national, E.U. and international projects. He has held several IEEE & ACM program committee memberships (e.g., ACM SIGCOMM, IEEE CloudCom, IFIP Networking). His current research interests fall within the general areas of wireless systems and mobile distributed systems.
Robin Sho Moser
Robin is the CEO of eyecandylab, a leading company for immersive video streaming in the Metaverse. eyecandylab is backed by Silicon Valley-based investors and has developed a solution for streaming companies to make their platform Metaverse-ready by converging augmented reality, AR headsets, and Non-Fungible tokens (NFTs). The solution has already been used by customers like Verizon, Google, and Red Bull.
Recent projects of the company have been honored with a nomination for an Emmy as well as a special mention during Google I/O, the company’s developer conference. He is in charge of identifying global opportunities and building potential strategic partnerships in the telecom and media market. In addition to that, he is also involved in global business development and sales. He was honored as an "Emerging Leader in Streaming" in 2020 for his contribution to the industry.
He spent his entire career at the intersection of technology and media. He founded a digital media agency providing consultancy to global brands and helping them through the digital transformation process with 10+ years of experience. Robin holds a B.A. in Media Management as the best graduate student in class and a scholar at Frankfurt School of Finance and Management’s Blockchain Center.
