The Journey From 5G To 6G: National Programmes, Global Coordination

The global pandemic has highlighted the importance of connectivity to citizens and economies. We are already seeing national and regional visions for 6G tying in with broader plans for digitalization and sometimes competing national priorities. Can 6G be a global standard and still meet the requirements of different national stakeholders?

This includes working with stakeholders to facilitate and develop links to maximise the benefits for the UK from 5G research and development. Prior to joining DCMS, Mohammad was with the Canadian federal public service for 6 years, where he held various roles driving strategic R&D&I policies in key growth sectors (2013-2019).

Additionally, Dr. Järvinen has been active in/with academia in various research programmes under European EIT DIGITAL, H2020/ESPRIT, ECSEL, CELTIC+ and ITEA.

    The Royal Decree appointing Mr. Arturo Azcorra Saloña as General Director of Telecommunications and Management of Audiovisual Communication Services was approved in the Council of Ministers, on Tuesday, April 27, 2021. Graduated from Loy-Norrix High-School, Michigan. Telecommunications Engineer with the degree of doctor. Master in Business Administration ("Executive MBA") from the Instituto de Empresa where he graduated with the number one of his class. He is a professor in the Department of Telematics Engineering at the Carlos III University of Madrid. In 2006 he was appointed director of the Imdea Networks International Research Institute, a position he continues to hold today. He served as general director of Technology Transfer and Business Development of the Ministry of Science and Innovation until he was appointed general director of the Center for Industrial Technological Development (CDTI). In 2012 he rejoined his Chair at Carlos III and the direction of the IMDEA Networks institute. In October 2018 he was appointed a member of the European Academy of Sciences "Academia Europaea". Since 2016 he is the vice president of the 5TONIC laboratory. He holds six patents in telecommunications technologies, some of them in operation. He has participated in thirty competitive research projects funded by the European Union within the framework of the ESPRIT, RACE, COMETT, Telematics, ACTS, IST, and ICT programs directing multiple of them. He is the author of more than one hundred publications in journals, books and international conferences of the highest scientific level. He has made guest stays as a researcher at ICSI of the University of Berkeley in 2000, and at MIT in 2002. In November 2020 he was awarded the ACM MSWIM Reginald Fessenden International Research Prize, for his contributions to the midhaul and core of 5G networks.

    Dr Alain Mourad has 20+ years of experience in wireless industrial R&D. He is currently a Senior Director at InterDigital and the Head of Future Wireless Europe Lab in London (UK) leading research on 5G evolution towards 6G. Prior to InterDigital, Alain was a Principal Standards Engineer at Samsung Electronics R&D (UK) and previously a Senior Engineer at Mitsubishi Electric R&D Centre Europe (France). Throughout his career, Alain has been active in the research and standardization of wireless systems (3GPP, IEEE802, DVB, ATSC, ETSI, IETF). Alain is a prolific inventor with over 50 issued patents and several additional patent applications. He received Samsung Electronics Inventor of the Year Award in 2012 and 2013, InterDigital Innovation Award in 2016, 2018 and 2020, 2018 Global Telecoms Award “Highly Commended” for “Advancing the road to 5G”, and the 2021 CSI Award “Highly Commended” for “Best 5G technology or service”.

    Bernard Barani joined the European Commission in 1994 after 11 years as a Communication engineer in the industry working on military optical systems and in the European Space Agency on advanced Satcom programmes. He is currently Deputy head of unit for “Future Connectivity systems” in the European Commission. In this position, he has been leading the definition and implementation of the 5G Public-Private Partnership launched in 2013 to support 5G European R&D. Main field of activities covers strategic R&D planning and implementation including future beyond 5G systems, standardisation, international cooperation, demonstration and pilot programmes. He is also vice-chairman of the Steering committee of the EUCNC conference showcasing telecom research sponsored by the EU programmes. He has an engineering degree from the "Ecole National Supérieure des Télécommunications de Bretagne".
