Convergence Points the Way Towards 6G

While each of these types of convergence is significant, this session explores what it will mean for the industry and the final shape of 6G as these trends come together.
Valerio FrascollaDirector, Research & Innovation, Intel Labs
Valerio Frascolla (Member, IEEE) received the M.Sc. and the Ph.D. degrees in electronic engineering. He is currently the Director of research and innovation with Intel. He has been working in different roles with Ancona University, Comneon, and Infineon and a Reviewer for the European Commission. He has expertise in wireless systems architecture and requirements management, standards bodies attendance (3GPP, ETSI, and IEEE), project and program management, and coaching and mentoring activities. He is the author of over 70 peer-reviewed publications. His main research interests include being 5G system design, with focus on machine learning algorithms, spectrum management, mmWaves, and edge technologies. He serves as a reviewer for several magazines and journals, as consortium lead for business, standardization, innovation, and exploitation matters in international research projects. He has a track record as an organizer of special sessions, workshops, and panels at flagship IEEE conferences.

Malik Saadi, Vice President, Strategic Technologies at ABI Research, is focused on technology innovation across various industries, including telecommunications, consumer electronics, the Internet of things (IoT), and other emerging industries. With more than 16 years of experience in the telecommunications and computing industries as a technology expert and analyst, Malik guides his research team toward uncovering the impact of technology innovation on different industries and markets. The goal is to provide clients with both a quantitative and qualitative vision of the overall market development and an understanding of how the various technologies involved will empower this development.
Caroline GabrielResearch Director, Networks, Analysys Mason & Co-Founder, Rethink Technology Research
Caroline Gabriel is Co-Founder of Rethink and operates as the company’s Research Director. She is expert in all forms of Wireless communication and has edited our research service Wireless Watch since its inception in 2002. She also leads our RAN Research forecasts which focus on open RAN, NFV, small cells, macro and micro cells, AI and SON, and also finds time to conduct consulting assignments for a wide variety of wireless businesses. Caroline Gabriel helped create Rethink Technology Research. To do so, in 2002 she left the Dutch publishing and research conglomerate VNU, at the top of the organization, as European Editorial Director. She has been explaining technology to people for almost 30 years and has conducted research assignments for most of the major businesses in the sector including The European Commission, Intel, Vodafone, Amdocs, the Small Cell Forum, the Wireless Broadband Alliance, Ofcom as well as start-ups like SpiderCloud, Deltenna and BLiNQ Networks. Caroline Gabriel has also partnered with other analyst groups in joint projects including RealWireless, the Yankee Group, Maravedis and ArcChart. The irony is that while Caroline works in a subject very much of the future, she studied History at Oxford University, although she always makes it clear that history has a habit of repeating itself, even within technology. Caroline Gabriel has spoken and chaired many conferences and is a well- known and respected figure within the LTE and 5G community.
Diego LopezSenior Technology Expert, Telefonica
Dr Diego R. Lopez joined Telefonica I+D in 2011 as a Senior Technology Expert, and is currently in charge of the Technology Exploration activities within the GCTIO Unit. Before joining Telefónica he spent some years in the academic sector, dedicated to research on network services, and was appointed member of the High-Level Expert Group on Scientific Data Infrastructures by the European Commission. Diego is currently focused on applied research in network infrastructures, with a special emphasis on virtualization, data-driven management, new architectures, and security. Diego is an ETSI Fellow and chairs the ETSI ISGs ZSM (on network automation) and PDL (on distribute ledger technologies), and the NOC of ETSI ISG NFV. Apart from this, Diego is a more than acceptable Iberian ham carver, and extremely fond of seeking and enjoying comics, and good discussions on any (in)appropriate matter.
Nicolas ChuberreSolution Line Manager, Thales Alenia Space
Nicolas CHUBERRE graduated from “Ecole Supérieure d’Ingénieur en Electronique et Electrotechnique” in Paris in 1988. Previously with Nokia & Alcatel Mobile phones to design signal processing algorithms, Medium Access Control protocols and integration test tools for 2G cellular handsets & systems, he joined Thales Alenia Space to manage the development of satellite payload equipment and the design of advanced Satellite Communication Systems (GEO and Non GEO). He has successfully initiated and led several European collaborative research projects in FP6, FP7, H2020 as well as ESA ARTES context. He has been chairing the SatCom Working Group of Networld2020 technology platforms (https://www.networld2020.eu/) during 9 years and as such was member of the partnership board of the 5G Infrastructure Association (http://5g-ppp.eu/). Nicolas has published several papers on innovative Satellite System concepts. Currently he is defining and developing Satellite Solutions for 5G. In addition, he is the lead representative of Thales in 3GPP TSG RAN where he is the rapporteur of the standardisation on satellite in 5G. He also chairs since 2006 the Satellite Communication and Navigation working group at ETSI (www.etsi.org).
Alain MouradHead of Future Wireless Europe Lab, InterDigital
Dr Alain Mourad has 20+ years of experience in wireless industrial R&D. He is currently a Senior Director at InterDigital and the Head of Future Wireless Europe Lab in London (UK) leading research on 5G evolution towards 6G. Prior to InterDigital, Alain was a Principal Standards Engineer at Samsung Electronics R&D (UK) and previously a Senior Engineer at Mitsubishi Electric R&D Centre Europe (France). Throughout his career, Alain has been active in the research and standardization of wireless systems (3GPP, IEEE802, DVB, ATSC, ETSI, IETF). Alain is a prolific inventor with over 50 issued patents and several additional patent applications. He received Samsung Electronics Inventor of the Year Award in 2012 and 2013, InterDigital Innovation Award in 2016, 2018 and 2020, 2018 Global Telecoms Award “Highly Commended” for “Advancing the road to 5G”, and the 2021 CSI Award “Highly Commended” for “Best 5G technology or service”.
