Delayering the business: is breaking up key to telco growth? – TM Forum

This report sets out to explore the benefits – and challenges – of structural separation and delayering, as well as defining those concepts and the specific characteristics of netcos, servcos and infracos. And it provides some case studies of CSPs that have embarked on those processes.

A physical layer security scheme for 6G wireless networks using post-quantum cryptography – Science Direct

This paper presents the design and implementation of an encryption scheme that ensures the confidentiality of data transmission in the physical layer of 6G networks. Our findings indicate that the proposed scheme offers satisfactory security protection against eavesdropping attacks by significantly enhancing the confidentiality of the transmitted signal.

Context-Aware Spectrum Coexistence of Terrestrial Beyond 5G Networks in Satellite Bands – Arxiv

Spectrum sharing between terrestrial 5G and incumbent networks in the satellite bands presents a promising avenue to satisfy the ever-increasing bandwidth demand of the next generation wireless networks. However, protecting incumbent operations from harmful interference poses a fundamental challenge. This paper proposes a context-aware method of managing interference.

ETSI – MEC Security White Paper: Status of Standards Support & Future Evolutions

ETSI – MEC Security White Paper: Status of Standards Support & Future Evolutions

This White Paper, the very first initiative in this domain, aims to identify aspects of security where the nature of edge computing leaves typical industry approaches to cloud security insufficient.
Edge computing environments are characterized by a complex multi-vendor, multi-supplier, multi-stakeholder ecosystem of equipment and both HW and SW devices. Given this overall level of system heterogeneity, security, trust and privacy are key topics for the edge environments.
In this heterogeneous scenario, end-to-end MEC security considers the impact on the elements coming from all stakeholders involved in the system. The paper provides an overview of ETSI MEC standards and current support for security, also complemented by a description of other relevant standards in the domain (e.g. ETSI TC CYBER, ETSI ISG NFV, 3GPP SA3) and cybersecurity regulation potentially applicable to edge computing. The White Paper concludes on a general perspective of future evolutions and standard directions on MEC security.

Colt: The Evolving Path to Cloud Adoption

Colt: The Evolving Path to Cloud Adoption

Colt Telecoms has released a report compiled by Censuswide, exploring what is driving the next era of cloud adoption.
It surveyed 400 IT decision-makers and C-level executives, across Europe and Asia.

• There is an increase in cloud projects, driven by technology evolution and emerging solutions.
• Businesses have a hunger to transform digitally, reduce legacy standards and embrace a whole new generation of compute, connectivity and partnerships.
• APIs and edge computing were some of the most significant elements according to respondents.

ETSI – Technology Radar Volume 1 Released

ETSI – Technology Radar Volume 1 Released

The ETSI Technology Radar highlights the probable technology trends that may influence ETSI’s quest to remain at the forefront of ICT standardization. The document is intended to promote awareness and discussion of the impact and evolution of such technology trends among ETSI members and the ICT community as a whole.

The ETSI Technology Radar White Paper touches on areas of technology development including: 5G Evolution, Artificial Intelligence, Autonomous Networks, Cybersecurity, Privacy and Trust, Distributed Ledgers (Blockchain), Dynamic Data, eXtended Reality (XR), Internet of Things, Quantum Computing, Encryption, Networks, Robotics and Autonomous Systems.

As well as describing the selected technology trends, it also examines the affinity of each technology with ETSI’s current work, providing potential timescales for the technology evolution and recommendations to the ETSI community as to how the technology standardization activates could be developed.

GSA: 5G National Spectrum Positions, April 2021

GSA: 5G National Spectrum Positions, April 2021

Spectrum in the 4400-5000 MHz range is of interest for mobile services, and although the market is at an early stage, an increasing number of countries are considering this spectrum for IMT. Sub-bands in the 4400-5000 MHz range have coprimary mobile allocation. At WRC-19 over 40 countries identified some or all of the spectrum in this range for IMT. A few countries have assigned spectrum in this range already.

The charts in this document show GSA’s current understanding of the state of mobile operator licensing around the world at 4400 MHz to 5000 MHz

Transforma Insights: Sustainability in New & Emerging Technologies

Transforma Insights: Sustainability in New & Emerging Technologies

Sponsored by InterDigital, Transforma Insights’ new report shows the impact that emerging technologies will have on sustainability within the telecoms sector and other sectors. The cost-benefits are complex and vary significantly, but overall digitalisation should support a much smaller ecological footprint.

In total, new technologies such as Artificial Intelligence and the Internet of Things will save approaching 1.8 PWh of electricity in 2030, and an additional 3.5 PWh of (hydrocarbon) fuel use, resulting in total savings of 5.3 PWh of energy. Offset against this benefit is 653TWh of electricity consumption required to power solutions deployed using new technologies.

For comparison, the total electricity consumption of the global ICT industry is forecast to increase to around 8 PWh by 2030, meaning that together new technologies will generate energy savings equal to around 58% of the total power consumption of the ICT industry.

Conceptualizing Security in a 6G World

Conceptualizing Security in a 6G World

The physical world of 2030 and beyond will be more networked, digitised and automated than ever before, depending on connectivity and AI to function. How do we make sure that bad actors cannot exploit this to endanger lives and economies?

Commissioned by 6GWorld, this ABI Research report maps out the interplay between security challenges and the evolution beyond 5G networks, including recommendations for action today and further reading.

Nokia: Communications in the 6G Era

Nokia: Communications in the 6G Era

In this paper, we attempt to paint a broad picture of
communication needs and technologies in the timeframe of 6G. The future of connectivity
is in the creation of digital twin worlds that are a true representation of the physical and
biological worlds at every spatial and time instant, unifying our experience across these
physical, biological and digital worlds. New themes are likely to emerge that will shape 6G
system requirements and technologies, such as: (i) new man–machine interfaces created
by a collection of multiple local devices acting in unison; (ii) ubiquitous universal computing
distributed among multiple local devices and the cloud; (iii) multi-sensory data fusion to
create multi-verse maps and new mixed-reality experiences; and (iv) precision sensing
and actuation to control the physical world.
