As we edge closer to the next frontier in wireless communication, 6G research is gaining momentum, promising to redefine connectivity with unprecedented speed, capacity, and intelligence. This blog discusses the heart of 6G research, highlighting the innovative efforts and breakthroughs that are setting the stage for this technological revolution.

Let’s dive in.

The Status of 6G Research

6G research is currently developing fast, with academia, industry leaders, and governmental bodies worldwide collaborating to outline the potential standards and capabilities. In November 2023, for example, the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) approved the institution’s 6G vision, and more standardization work is on the way.

As of today, efforts are focused on identifying the pillars that will enable 6G, such as terahertz frequency bands, advanced AI integrations, and novel network architectures, and find solutions for the challenges the new technologies will demand.

Recent advancements include breakthroughs in terahertz communications, which promise to deliver data speeds up to 100 times faster than 5G. Additionally, innovations in energy-efficient network components and AI algorithms for predictive networking are paving the way for a sustainable and intelligent infrastructure.

Experts are also carrying out 6G research in the Reconfigurable Intelligent Surfaces (RIS) field. RIS are expected to direct scattered signals toward a predetermined path, making mobile communications much more efficient.

What 6G Research Do We Expect to See in the Coming Year?

The coming year is expected to witness significant strides in 6G research, with increased focus on sustainable networking solutions, quantum communication security, and machine learning models for autonomous network management. These developments will lay the groundwork for pilot projects and early standardization efforts.

Countries Leading 6G Research

As happened to every previous generation, the development of a new G stumbles over geopolitics. Since 2019, when the first 6G white paper went online, governments across the world have been making efforts to take early leadership.

Finland

The Finnish initiative 6G Flagship, led by the University of Oulu, is the world’s first 6G research programme, concentrating studies in areas such as terahertz sensing, health, industry, visible light communications, and many others.

China

The country with the most 6G patents, China is putting a ton of effort to maintain the leadership built with 5G. Even though it is difficult to accurately assess the Chinese evolution and investments in R&D, we know that Huawei was the first Chinese company to announce that it was starting work on 6G in 2019. State-owned telecoms companies China Unicom and China Mobile are also in the loop, building research labs for the next generation of mobile communications.

United States

Even though the United States started a bit later to properly tackle 6G, the country has been investing big dollars in research. Its flagship initiative, the Next G Alliance, has been conducting studies and making agreements to advance the 6G conversations both domestically and internationally. The federal government has inked partnerships with several other nations, and many of the governmental bodies like the FCC, NIST, and NSF are paying attention to the topic.

Europe

The European Union as a block is another powerful player on the board. The continent has several 6G research projects going on, while being home to some of the most impactful institutions, including the University of Surrey and its 5G/6G Innovation Centre, the University of Oulu, among others.

South Korea

Led by the Ministry of Science and ICT, the South Korean government is committing USD 130 million to 5G and 6G research in 2024 and also plans to present a “pre-6G” demo by 2026. Operators SK Telecom and LG, for once, are developing technologies to enable future networks.

Japan

The Japanese administration established the Beyond 5G Promotion Consortium in 2020. The country’s forum of discussions about the development of future networks conducts studies and organizes events around 6G technologies. The federal government signed a partnership with the United States to boost research.

Industry Leaders in 6G Research

As we venture into the future of telecommunications, several industry giants are leading the charge in 6G research and technology development. These companies are not only investing in foundational research but are also pioneering innovative solutions that promise to revolutionize the way we connect. Each of these leaders brings unique strengths and focuses to the table, from enhancing network efficiency and capacity to integrating advanced technologies like AI and quantum computing into the fabric of 6G.

Key players are at the forefront of 6G research, investing heavily in developing the technologies that will underpin 6G networks. These companies are working alongside academic institutions and international consortia to drive the research agenda forward.

The companies doing this work include:
