Panels
Panel 1: Shaping Up 6G: Drivers, Use-Cases and KPI Requirements
Tuesday, October 20, 2020,  from 11:00 a.m. – 12:10 p.m. EST

With each new generation of wireless, it is common to determine its capabilities and limits even before the technology is introduced. As 5G is deployed and standardized around the globe, industry is eager to explore and begin developing a consensus around 6G and its key performance indicators (KPIs), including roughly 1 Tbps system capacity, user plane latency of <0.1ms, and per-user data rate of few Gbps.

With much debate around the use cases and KPIs that will eventually give meaning to 6G, this panel invites experts from across industry and academia to discuss the applications that will be enabled by 6G, including volumetric media streaming, connected industries and automation, multi-sensory extended reality, and eHealth, in addition to the political, economic, social, and technical drivers that will help shape consensus-driven KPIs for 6G.

Panel 2: Understanding the 6G Tech Landscape
Tuesday, October 20, 2020,  from 12:30 p.m – 1:40 p.m. EST

The demands of our hyper-connected, fully digitized, and data-driven intelligent society are pushing the capabilities of 5G technology to its limits. Beyond 5G (B5G) moves beyond the technologies that shaped 5G to create a pathway for the 6G technologies that will make a hyper-connected world possible.

B5G evolution tracks industry trends like higher frequency bands, the fusion of wireless with AI/ML, and edge and cloud native computing offer clues to what 6G technologies may look like in the future. Panelists will explore different ways to reimagine wireless network architecture to support new KPIs and encourage the evolution of the architecture to support 6G.

Moderator: Douglas Castor, Senior Director InterDigital Research and Innovation.

Panel 3: The Role of AI/ML in 6G Wireless Systems
Tuesday, October 20, 2020,  from 1:45 p.m. – 2:55 p.m. EST

The demand for faster data rates and ultra-low latency are the main drivers for emerging wireless standards and 5G communications. In the near future, bleeding-edge applications like shared VR experiences and self-driving cars, will rely on the ubiquity and real-time reconfigurability of high-speed wireless links. Today, the wireless channel and surrounding environment changes rapidly, and the current state-of-the-art wireless protocol design was not developed to support or optimize the variety and scale of future applications.

Acknowledging that wireless inflexibility will severely hamper the widespread deployment of next-generation wireless networks due to inter-protocol interference, AI and machine learning algorithms offer valuable clues in addressing wireless inference problems. This panel will explore the role of AI/ML in 6G technologies as well as the key enablers that support AI/ML in wireless.

Moderator: Kaushik Chowdhury, Professor, Northeastern University

Panel 4: Conquering the Spectrum
Wednesday, October 21, 2020,  from 11:00 a.m. – 12:10 p.m. EST

Spectrum may be one of our future’s hottest commodities. Integral to enabling an ever-increasing number of connected devices, spectrum and untapped spectral resources are the focus of the latest innovative research and techniques. Cellular systems, Wi-Fi networks, and fixed and mobile links are progressively crowding the spectrum, prompting the U.S. FCC to allocate more than 20 GHz of non-consecutive bandwidth for unlicensed services, experimental licenses, and the exploration of innovative applications in the THz communication – a key wireless technology at the core of 6G systems.

This panel will explore the innovative research and techniques leading the search to unveil untapped spectrum, the role of governments and spectrum policy makers in enabling spectrum access, outline a few technical roadblocks to tapping into the THz band, and examine the road of opportunity beyond.

Panel 5: Spectrum Sharing in 6G Systems
Wednesday, October 21, 2020,  from 12:30 p.m. – 1:40 p.m. EST

Future 6G wireless systems will be defined by their ability to flexibly and efficiently utilize a scarce resource – spectrum. The U.S. Federal Communications Commission and National Telecommunications and Information Administration recently proposed the opening of 3.5 GHz (Citizens Broadband Radio Service CBRS) band to share spectrum for wireless broadband use. A key challenge remains in how to maximize overall system throughput while guaranteeing reliable communications and minimum quality of service for those sharing the spectrum.

This panel will explore the advancement in enabling spectrum sharing, and the impact of softwarization and AI on spectrum sharing in future wireless systems. A diverse group of panelists will outline the challenges and opportunities associated with transitioning future cellular networks to a cloud-native, end-to-end programmable, fully virtualized paradigm, and the impact of that transition on spectrum sharing among licensed and unlicensed wireless systems. The discussion will also address whether the availability of AI-based algorithms to automatically control and orchestrate network resources end-to-end will impact our ability to provide reliable and efficient spectrum sharing.

Panel 6: Platforms for Experimental Research: Are we ready for 6G?
Wednesday, October 21, 2020,  from 1:45 p.m. – 2:55 p.m. EST

The advent of 5G has brought the introduction of cloud native platforms, the disaggregation of radio access networks, and a paradigm shift towards openness – at the expense of complexity and increased operational expertise needed by traditional telco operators. Future 6G testbeds must prioritize the integration of multiple access technologies, and to do so, may consider a more solutions-focused approach. The testbed needs will be discussed from the perspective of enabling technology providers, including those who construct components of the platform infrastructure, providers of device firmware, middleware, and hardware to create an entire system platform, and application engineers create the products that run on it.

This panel will investigate approaches to advance the Platform as a Service (PaaS) model for testbeds and develop approaches to take necessary steps for creating an infrastructure platform that can be application agnostic.

He leads the Rice Networks Group. The group’s projects include deployment, operation, and management of a large-scale urban wireless network in a Houston under-resourced community. This network, Technology For All (TFA) Wireless, has served over 4,000 users in several square kilometers and employs custom-built programmable and observable access points. See a video from the 2016 White House announcement of the Advanced Wireless Research Initiative. The network was the first to provide residential access in frequencies spanning from unused UHF TV bands to legacy Wi-Fi bands (500 MHz to 5 GHz). His group developed the first multi-user beam-forming WLAN system that demonstrates a key performance feature now provided by Wi-Fi since the 802.11ac amendment.
